How does our Shift System work?

The day crewing shift system is a new shift system for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service that is part of the modernisation process of the brigade to increase the resilience and preventative work firefighters currently undertake in the local community.

The watch of 13 work a 9-5 day based on station providing cover for a rescue pump and one of the special appliances held at station. This provides a increased response time for the local community and allows a greater resilience for the island. Outside of the 9 – 5 crews are available on alerter contact.

The station also has a retained compliment of 13 that are available via alerter contact for larger incidents during the day and for incidents outside of the watch duty system.

With having a day crewing station this allows fire fighters at Ryde to carry out vital home fire safety checks, local business risk assessments and community work all during the working day which aid to lower risk levels and educate the community in fire and road safety.
